Why Champagne is special
It's the birthplace of the world's most famous wine — the only region allowed to call its sparkling wine Champagne — and a UNESCO cultural landscape of grand houses, chalk cellars and vineyards around Reims and Épernay. Descending into the crayères and tasting where the bottles are born is a genuine bucket-list day, and it's remarkably close to Paris.
The practicalities of the day
It's an easy trip — about 1.5 hours from Paris each way — so tours run as comfortable full days. You can train to Reims or Épernay independently, but the cellar visits and tastings are much easier arranged through a guided day trip, which also handles the driving.
Go guided so everyone can taste
More than at most destinations, a guide matters here: they book the house visits, explain the traditional method as you go, and — crucially — drive, so nobody in your party has to stay sober. It's the difference between glimpsing Champagne and properly experiencing it.
Choose by the houses, and pace yourself
Pick your tour by which producers it visits and how many tastings you get, not just the price. Dress for cool cellars, eat well at lunch, and take the tastings at a steady pace. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in a date now and adjust later.
